How to Make LOVE the Focus of Your Home Decorating

My name is Gail Van Kleeck.  I’m the Home Decorating Fairy Godmother and the President of Dover Interiors.  What I love about my home decorating career is that I am able to help both my readers and clients create welcoming, budget-respecting homes that honor and enrich their relationships.

When I think of the word “home” I think of the many ways you can use LOVE as the focus of your home decorating.

When I was younger I spent seven years as a Hospice Volunteer and the privilege of that experience has touched nearly everything in my life.  What I saw clearly was this:

WHEN ALL WE ACHIEVE,  ACCUMULATE AND ACCOMPLISH ARE GONE…WHO WE LOVE, WHO LOVES US AND HOW WE SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER IN THE MIDST OF OUR DIFFERENCES, IS REALLY ALL THERE IS!

To make LOVE the focus of your home decorating, imagine beginning outside your front door.  If you paint the door frame the same color as the door, the door will seem wider and more welcoming.

Then imagine standing outside the entrance to your home for a just an instant…  hearing the wind chime you have hung near-by or smelling the fragrance of the flowers you have planted.  Think about how those things might touch your heart with gratitude and love… even before you walk through your door.  If you live in an apartment or condominium, you can create the same loving feeling with a seasonal wreath or with a small, personal reminder hung on or beside your door.

Once you’ve walked through your door, you can make LOVE the focus of your home decorating by drawing the colors for your home from a piece of artwork, a patterned rug or a fabric so your rooms will have a greater sense of connection.

If you and your family spend the majority of your time in your kitchen or family room, you can make LOVE a part of your home decorating by talking with them about how you might enjoy using some of your other rooms together.  You can make LOVE the focus of your home decorating by off-centering your dining room table and creating a place for an upright piano….or by placing a game-table or bookcase in a seldom-used living room.

The more reasons you and your family have for going into a room, the greater the possibility that you will use it together.

You can make LOVE the focus of your home decorating by rearranging your family room or living room furniture so it will be easier for the people who are seated there to talk with one another.

The reason we tend to have more lengthy conversations when we are sitting at a table is that we can see each other’s eyes.

If you can see each other’s eyes more clearly when you are seated in other parts of your home, it will be easier for you to share your thoughts and dreams.

Once you’ve begun to change your focus, you’ll be surprised by how many other ways you will find to make LOVE the focus of your home decorating.
