The Exterior of Your Home

Ideas about your home’s exterior from the Home Decorating Fairy Godmother.

Sometimes, when my clients see rooms they admire in magazines, they tell themselves they can’t have rooms like that in their home.

They tell themselves it wouldn't fit into their home’s architecture or budget or that their family won’t like it. This can rob them of their sense of what is possible and keep them from living in surroundings that sing their song and nurture their spirit. In the next few weeks I will be showing you photographs of different home exteriors and teaching you how to see and think about specific parts of them.

If you will look at each home with the goal of finding just one small thing you honestly love,  you’ll begin teaching yourself how to see what is possible rather than what is not…and that is an important way of seeing…both in your home and in your life.

Idea #1 from The Home Decorating Fairy Godmother:

If your front door and the molding around it are the same color your door will look larger and more welcoming.

Idea #2 from The Home Decorating Fairy Godmother.

If you are planning to paint the exterior of your home, look first at your roof.

A dark colored roof invites you to use darker colored paint on the body of your home so they will have a better relationship with one another.

Idea #3 from The Home Decorating Fairy Godmother:

If you are planning to replace your roof this year, this may help you.

If your home is in a wooded area, you may want to choose a darker colored roof because will feel more related to the deeper color of the trees.

Idea #4 from The Home Decorating Fairy Godmother:

If you are planning to replace your roof this year, this may help you.

If your home is in an open area you may want to choose a lighter colored roof because it will feel more related to the openness of the sky.

Idea # 5 from The Home Decorating Fairy Godmother:

One of the guidelines for decorating is that contrast calls attention to itself… and white creates more contrast than any other color.

When you are choosing colors for the exterior of your home, think first about how you would like your home to FEEL. If you would like it to feel bold and exciting you may want to use a higher level of contrast.
